Here is my pat answer "In my opinion there is no safe way to properly clean a coin".
Have I cleaned some inexpensive copper pieces in the past, yes. Has it turned out OK? Sometimes. I won't provide any advice on cleaning coins because I have not found a full proof way of cleaning a coin without potentially damaging it.
