The Red Tailed-Hawk 50 Cent Proof Coin

The Royal Canadian Mint has issued this year its 2000 50--cent sterling silver coin series entitled Canada's Birds of Prey: the Bald Eagle, the Osprey, the Great Horned Owl and the Red-Tail Hawk featuring four species of birds of prey which are indigenous to Canada's rich and diverse wildlife.

The Red-Tailed Hawk

The Red-Tailed Hawk is smaller than eagles or vultures and has broad rounded wings. The adult is easily distinguished by the fan-like shape of its tail which has no distinct banding on the underside, and generally a brilliant red across the top. Throughout Canada, the body of the Red-tailed Hawk displays a variety of colours: The Harlan's (harlani)Hawk can be almost black while the Krider's hawk can be nearly white. It is a graceful glider which can soar for hours, using its 1.2 m (4ft) wingspan to float from one column of air to another. The Red-tailed Hawk is a common sight on Canada's prairies, having cleverly identified the shelterbelt trees that were planted by farmers as strategic nesting areas. Red-tailed Hawks migrate to Mexico and Central America for the winter.

Quebec artist Pierre Leduc designed The Red Tailed Hawk coin. The obverse of each coin features a contemporary effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt.

Each individual coin is encapsulated and presented in a display folder protected by an illustrative sleeve featuring information on Canada's Birds of Prey and the artists. In the four coin set, each coin is encapsulated and inserted in a presentation box with a booklet on the artists and the four species depicted on the coins. All coins can be removed from the presentation box.
