ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, AU
- Showing the merest trace of wear from any cause.
ABRASIONS
- Light rubbing or scuffing from friction. Not the same as bagmarks.
ABSOLUTE RARITY
- See Rare.
ACCIDENTAL RARITY
- An improperly struck coin.
ACCOLATED, CONJOINED, JUGATE
- Design with two heads facing in the same direction and overlapping.
ACCUMULATION
- Coins, tokens, etc. unsorted, unclassified, and unattributed; not a collection
ACETONE
- A liquid organic solvent. Can be safely used (ie. will not damage the lustre or toning) to remove grease, dirt, and other organic materials on a coin's surface. See also Trichlorotrifluoroethane.
ADJUSTMENT
- Filing down the face of an overweight planchet. This was a common practice on 18th century coins. Also refers to the arranging of a die in the press to attain correct striking; coins struck during the adjustment process are abnormal in various way and are known as "adjustment trial pieces" or "set-up trials" usually characterized by extreme weakness in design. ADJUSTMENT MARKS
- A series of parallel grooves caused by the removal of small scrapings of metal to adjust overweight planchets before they were struck. Not the same as scratches. Uncirculated coins with visible adjustment marks are at first graded ignoring these marks. They are then described separately with the selected grade.
ADVANCED COLLECTOR
- As apposed to a Beginning or Novice collector. One who has acquired a highly specialized interest, knowledge or expertise in a collecting area. Also one who has developed very high quality tastes as a Connoisseur collector. See Specialist.
ALLOY
- Mixture of more than one metal, usually preceded by the name of the most predominant or most important metal in the mix, such as nickel alloy. Alloys are used to produce a coin of more durable and cheaper composition.
ALTERATION
- The tampering with the feature of a coin's surface such as the date, mint mark, etc. to give it the appearance of being another date, mint mark or variety. An illegal practice.
ALTERED DATE
- A false date on a coin. A date altered to make a coin appear to be one of a rarer or more valuable issue.
ANA
- American Numismatic Association.
ANACS
- American Numismatic Association Certification Service.
ANACS PAPERS
- The official documentation issued by the ANACS for any numismatic material they have certified and/or graded.
ANCIENT COIN
- Generally any coin issued before 500 A.D.
ANNEALING
- The softening of planchets by the application of heat followed by slow cooling. Annealing renders the planchets more responsive to the impact of the obverse, reverse, and collar dies.
ANTIDATED PIECES
- Coin struck and dated after the date of regular issue. See also Restrike.
APPROVAL SALE
- Reference to a coin that is sent to a prospective customer and if acceptable (ie. approved) will be paid for after receipt and examination.
AQUA REGIA
- A mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid that will dissolve gold.
ARTIFICIAL CAMEO PROOFLIKE
- A coin that has been whizzed to imitate a true cameo prooflike by buffing the fields to a near-proof look and painting an acid on the devices to create a frosty contrast.
ARTIFICIAL TONING
- Man-made colour with the aid of chemicals and accomplished over a relatively short time (minutes to weeks). Usually done in deliberate attempt to conceal poor quality lustre, wear, hairlines

ASSAY
- An analytic test or trial to determine the fineness, weight, and consistence of precious or other metal in a coin or bullion.
ASSAY PIECE
- Trial piece, or piece reserved for analytic test.
ATTRIBUTION
- The identification of a numismatic item by characteristics such as issuing authority, date, period, mint, denomination, metal in which struck, and by a standard reference.
AU
- See About Uncirculated.
AUCTION
- Method of selling by which items are presented for sale to the highest bidder. See also Consignor, Reserve, Minimum Bid, Book.
AUTHORIZED ISSUE
- An issue (coin) by a governmental authority or by civilian or military authority in control of an area.
AVAILABILITY
- Refers to the market availability of a coin in a particular grade at any given time. Not to be confused with a coin's rarity which is a statement of its actual existence, ie. may exist but not be for sale.
